El-Sayed opposes ‘unconditional’ US military aid to Israel, other countries
Abdul El-Sayed, who won the Democratic Party’s Senate primary in Michigan, has outlined his stance on foreign military assistance in an interview with CNN.
“I’m opposed to unconditional military aid for any country. That is Israel, yes, but that’s also Egypt, where my family immigrated from. That’s Pakistan, that’s Saudi Arabia, that’s UAE,” El-Sayed said.
He argued that US tax revenue should prioritise domestic needs.
“And that’s not because of a focus on what’s happening anywhere except for a focus \[on] what’s happening here. We’ve got communities in my state where the median income is $14,000. And I believe they have a right to their tax dollars,” El-Sayed said.
“I also believe in international law, in upholding international law, and there are Leahy laws against dealing arms to countries who are engaged in human rights abuses, and I don’t want to fund a foreign military that does genocide, apartheid or has taken us to a war we don’t need to fight,” he added.
“I believe in equal rights to peace, dignity, and self-determination for Jewish Israelis and Palestinians alike.”
El-Sayed, a 41-year-old doctor, won the Democratic nomination on Wednesday after defeating Representative Haley Stevens, who benefitted from tens of millions of dollars in spending by a pro-Israel super PAC. If El-Sayed wins in November, he would become the first Muslim senator in US history.

Israeli forces raid West Bank camp as settlers assault Palestinians
Israeli forces and settlers continued a campaign of raids, arrests and home demolitions across the occupied West Bank on Wednesday, according to the Wafa news agency.
Here are some of the reported incidents:

+ Israeli forces detained 12 Palestinians across several West Bank governorates, including a woman in Qalandiya camp, a man in Silwan, a young person in Kafr Aqab, and nine young men across villages in the Jenin governorate.
+ Israeli troops stormed the Qalandiya camp with heavy military equipment, raiding homes and the Popular Committee office. Additional raids were reported in al-Khader, Husan, Kafr Malek, and Deir Jarir.
+ Israeli authorities demolished three homes in Nahhalin and al-Maniya near Bethlehem, as well as a home in Al-Bi’ina in the Galilee. They issued demolition notices in Jaba and seized three homes in Ramallah’s Satah Marhaba neighbourhood for military use.
+ Israeli settlers attacked Khirbet Tuba in Masafer Yatta, leaving several residents injured and shelters burned. Settlers also fenced off land in the Jordan Valley, tampered with water infrastructure in Nablus, and spray-painted racist slogans in Tulkarem.

Oil prices edge lower amid hopes of deal on Hormuz Strait
Oil prices are declining as investors consider whether progress in discussions between Iran and Oman might lead to a US-Iran peace agreement to halt the five-month conflict and unblock the Strait of Hormuz, according to the Reuters news agency.
Brent crude futures dropped 37 cents, or 0.5 percent, to $79.08 a barrel as of 00:24 GMT.
US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures went down 53 cents, or 0.7 percent, to $74.69 a barrel.
The losses came after Brent closed with slight gains on Wednesday, while WTI finished marginally lower.

Deal on Strait of Hormuz does not mean ‘end to the crisis’

Iran says it has reached an understanding with Oman on the geographical coordinates of a new shipping route in the Strait of Hormuz, bringing weeks of negotiations closer to a formal agreement.
These discussions are now at the final drafting stage, pending a joint final statement to be finalised.
But Iranian officials argue that these discussions are exclusively with Oman, without any foreign or outside interference. They also say that any agreement does not mean that the situation will be brought back to pre-war conditions, arguing that the military actions and the naval blockade imposed by the United States on Iran are the cause of the disruption of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
On the other hand, Washington rejects reports suggesting that Iran would have control over traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, and they say that any temporary route should not require any permits, approvals, or fees.
Separately, Iran’s president, Masoud Pezeshkian, during the second anniversary of his inauguration, said that Iran’s enemies have targeted military commanders, scientists, and the country’s strategic capabilities to undermine the country’s resilience and technological progress.
So while a final agreement on a temporary route in the Strait of Hormuz is now in the making, the dispute remains unresolved. That means that any agreement on a shipping route in the Strait of Hormuz does not necessarily mean the end to the crisis.
