All eyes are on Washington today, where Xi Jinping has arrived for a high-stakes two-day summit with Donald Trump (Follow along with the FT’s live blog here).
It is the Chinese president’s first visit to the US capital in more than a decade. And as my colleagues Demetri Sevastopulo and Joe Leahy report, it will involve plenty of fanfare.
At the top of the agenda are trade relations and the creation of an AI dialogue to discuss risks posed by the technology. Shortly after Xi landed last night, US Treasury secretary Scott Bessent said the countries had agreed to extend their one-year trade truce, which was set to expire on November 10, until January 10.
Xi is also expected to raise the subject of Taiwan. Trump sparked alarm in May when he said American arms sales to Taiwan were a “good negotiating chip”, suggesting that he might curtail US support for Taipei.
But there will also be plenty of pomp and cultural events. A formal welcome ceremony will be held on the South Lawn of the Wh
