President Erdogan will receive the Prime Minister of Germany's North Rhine-Westphalia state in Ankara in an exceptional gesture underscoring the significance of bilateral ties. The visit commemorates the 65th anniversary of the German-Turkish recruitment agreement that facilitated the migration of hundreds of thousands of Turkish workers to West Germany.
"The talks are expected to focus on the close ties between North Rhine-Westphalia and Turkey, economic cooperation, and current political issues," according to a statement from the Minister President's delegation.
The meeting is scheduled to take place this afternoon. It is an unusual move: regional heads of government are not normally received by presidents—at least not when it comes to countries of similar size and importance. But there are exceptions. By scheduling this meeting, Erdogan is certainly lending the visit to Wüst special significance.
An anniversary is a reason to take a trip
The main reason for the three-day trip is the 65th anniversary of the German-Turkish recruitment agreement, which paved the way for the immigration of hundreds of thousands of Turkish workers to the Federal Republic of Germany. This is the first trip by a head of government from North Rhine-Westphalia to Turkey and, for Wüst, his first visit to Turkey ever.
At the start of the trip, Wüst spoke in favor of opening a “new chapter” in German-Turkish relations. “We want to focus on the positive in order to strengthen cooperation in the future,” said the Christian Democrat. In a strong and close partnership, he added, it is easier to address critical issues and advocate for improvements.
Wüst had set out that morning on a commercial flight from Düsseldorf to Ankara with a large delegation. He is accompanied by, among others, a high-level business delegation and more than 30 journalists.
Wüst Reiterates: Wants to Remain Minister President
For weeks, the head of the North Rhine-Westphalian state government has been touted as a possible successor to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who is under immense pressure. Together with the other seven CDU state premiers, however, he has backed the chancellor and spoken out against debates over personnel changes. On the evening before his departure, he reiterated on ZDF: “I want to remain Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia.”
