The major Saudi oil pipeline hit by an attack last week will remain largely out of service for several weeks due to the repairs required, according to two officials in the region. The AP reports this on its website. The East-West pipeline, which crosses the Kingdom, is crucial to Saudi Arabia’s strategy of diverting oil exports towards the Red Sea, thereby bypassing the Strait of Hormuz (in the Persian Gulf), where Iranian attacks have disrupted maritime traffic. The 1,200-kilometre-long pipeline has a transport capacity of up to 7 million barrels of oil per day. On Thursday, the pipeline was shut down following an attack that Saudi Arabia attributed to drones belonging to Iranian-backed Iraqi militias. Officials briefed on the matter said that repairs to the damage — including damage to a key pumping station — could take between three and five weeks. One of them added that the pipeline could operate partially whilst repair teams carry out the work. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity, as they were not authorised to make statements to the media. The Saudi oil company Aramco, which operates the pipeline, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Centre for International Communication, a government body that oversees relations with foreign media in the Kingdom, said it was reviewing the AP’s request for information regarding the timeline for repairing the facility.

The United States has confirmed that it opposed the participation of the head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organisation, Mohammad Eslami, at the IAEA’s annual conference in Vienna. This was stated by the US Secretary of Energy, Chris Wright, who said that Eslami ‘is subject to sanctions’. Eslami, who is also Iran’s Vice-President for Nuclear Affairs, was due to speak at the Vienna conference today. “He requested an exemption, which was denied,” explained Wright. “Iran is not demonstrating the necessary transparency towards the International Atomic Energy Agency,” the US Secretary continued, calling on Tehran to show “greater cooperation with the IAEA”.

The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, has stated that for over a year the Agency has been unable to verify on an ongoing basis the status of Iran’s declared uranium stocks – including uranium enriched to 60 per cent – at Iranian nuclear facilities damaged by attacks. In his address to the 70th IAEA General Conference, he added that the lack of information on this nuclear material and the inability to access the facilities to carry out verification raise “serious concerns regarding nuclear proliferation” and require action “with the utmost urgency”.

And that is why we must oppose such oppressive political pressure,” Behrouz Kamalvandi, a senior official at the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran, told AFP. “This latest malicious act by the US administration can only be interpreted as childish behaviour.”

Beijing has rejected “baseless allegations” that Chinese entities provided Tehran with satellite images of a military base housing US troops in Jordan, both before and after an Iranian attack that resulted in the deaths of three American soldiers.The allegations reported at the weekend by the Wall Street Journal concerned the missile strikes launched by Iran on 17 July against the Muwaffaq Salti airbase in Jordan. The Houthis, an Iranian-backed rebel group in Yemen, have expanded their area of control in the Red Sea by seizing two islands, Greater Hanish and Lesser Hanish, situated to the north of the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait: the Associated Press reports on its website, citing sources from both the Houthis themselves and the opposing government forces, which are backed by Riyadh. The AP adds that the capture of the two islands took place whilst, over the past weekend, pro-government forces were attempting to reorganise themselves to counter the offensive launched in recent days by the Houthis, which has enabled them to gain ground in south-western Yemen. A government military officer quoted by the AFP news agency had stated that Greater Hanish and Lesser Hanish had fallen under Houthi control as early as last Friday, when the rebel group had also seized the strategic island of Mayyun, further south.
