A heavy police presence was hard to miss on the streets of Paris on Saturday, as the capital saw demonstrations for a third consecutive weekend over the rising cost of living and deteriorating conditions in schools. But the increased security failed to prevent clashes in several parts of the city. Riot police fired tear gas to push back protesters, while small fires broke out in several areas. Similar scenes unfolded across the country, including in Bordeaux, Toulouse and Marseille. Still, the demonstrations were largely less violent than the chaos witnessed on October 17. Caroline Baum has this round-up of the day's events.
