Iraq has halted all passenger, vehicle and commercial-truck traffic at the Sheeb crossing with Iran until further notice, according to Reuters sources. An Iraqi government source said Baghdad will gradually close several more crossings with Iran in the coming days.

Two sources at Iraq's Sheeb crossing into Iran told Reuters that officials had halted passenger, vehicle and commercial-truck traffic. They said the crossing was “closed to passengers, vehicles and commercial trucks until further notice”.

A separate source told Reuters that authorities made the decision to review security arrangements at the crossing.

An Iraqi government source earlier told Al Jazeera that the government had ordered the closure but gave no reason. The source said Iraq would gradually close several more crossings with Iran in the coming days.

Officials have not issued a public statement or said how many crossings they plan to close.
