The great British fry-up appears to have been implicated in the Salmonella outbreak sweeping the UK, with investigators pointing to eggs served in “small cafes, restaurants, and takeaway businesses” in an update released on Thursday.
Professor Ian Young, Chief Scientific Advisor at the Food Standards Agency, suggested that traditional fried eggs with a runny yolk are best avoided while the outbreak is ongoing.
“When eating out, the safest approach for vulnerable people is to ensure they’re thoroughly cooked and to avoid dishes containing raw or lightly cooked egg,” Prof Young said.
The agency has identified three related strains of*Salmonella enteritidis*responsible for 259 cases and one death between 11 August 2025 and August 8 of this year.
The three strains, *t5.9411, t0.24068*and *t5.9765,* are all closely related and are believed to have entered the country through imported eggs, or foods made with imported eggs.
Investigators are now trying to track the source of the contaminated eggs, with evidence pointing to “eggs imported to the UK from abroad,” the UKHSA said.
Most eggs sold in the UK are British, but 11 per cent are imported from overseas.
The biggest single exporter of eggs to the UK is Ukraine, which accounts for almost a third of imports alone, and is where a separate Salmonella outbreak involving a strain known as*ST2045*was found to have emerged from earlier this year.
