A supertanker caught fire after hitting naval mines while trying to cross a restricted zone south of the Strait of Hormuz, Fars news agency reported, citing a statement by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
The IRGC navy identified the vessel as the Algaya and said efforts to control the fire had failed, leaving the entire ship engulfed in flames.
The statement said it had warned vessels against using the route and reiterated that it continued to monitor and control the Strait of Hormuz.
