Ilhan Omar backs el-Sayed as ‘future’ of Democratic party

US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar says el-Sayed “represents the future of our party”.

In a post on X, Omar said “Dr. Abdul El-Sayed will be an incredible fighter for Michiganders”, a few hours after El-Sayed’s primary challenger Stevens backed the Republican candidate for US Senate Rogers.

“Don’t get distracted by the noise from shills for AIPAC”, wrote Omar, adding that the focus should be on “money out of politics. More money in your pockets. Medicare for All. That’s the fight”.

“Vote Abdul,” she wrote.

Senator Chris Murphy recovering after suffering stroke

Connecticut Democratic Senator Chris Murphy is “awake and alert” after being hospitalised following a stroke, the Associated Press (AP) is reporting citing his chief of staff.

Allison Herwitt, Murphy’s chief of staff, said the 53-year old “started experiencing numbness in his arm while at his son’s hockey game” on Saturday.

“He was taken to a local hospital, where it was discovered he had experienced a stroke,” she said, adding that they were “optimistic he will make a full recovery”.

Murphy, whose current term ends in 2031, returned from a tour of US allies and bases in the Middle East last month, and said a few days ago that he had seen the new plan for an attack on Iran, calling it “catastrophic”.

How do the midterms work?

On Tuesday, about 210 million registered voters will decide how much power Donald Trump has for the rest of his US presidency.

Trump is not on the ballot, but control of the US Congress is. Made up of the House of Representatives and the Senate, Congress writes the country’s laws and controls federal spending.

And that’s a big deal.

All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats are being contested, including special elections in Florida and Ohio to fill the seats vacated by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance.

Voters in 36 states will also elect governors.

Beyond Congress and governors, American voters will also elect state legislators and local officials.
