Neither side teasing a big breakthrough on trade, AI

If there was going to be a big agreement today, the Trump administration would be making a big deal about the fact there is going to be a big agreement. That has not happened.

We do know that the administration has effectively suspended the trade war for another two months. The agreement both countries had over tariffs was due to run out in November. Scott Bessent, the treasury secretary, has said just in the last hour, that that is now extended into January to allow more talks to continue.

As far as AI is concerned, Donald Trump has, in the last hour, gone onto social media to say he wants to leave it as it is when it comes to dealing with AI. That’s China’s position, too.

So don’t expect any big announcements, any big breakthrough on AI.

CNN, Politico, and MS NOW ask court for emergency hearing

As we reported earlier, the White House appears to still be blocking access to some news outlets, despite a judge’s order.

The media outlets have filed an emergency hearing after being refused access to the White House, alleging the Trump administration has not complied with the court’s order.

Iran war looms large over Trump visit

China is Iran’s biggest trading partner, with Beijing long representing a possible interlocutor as peace talks have stalled.

Trump has so far resisted making a direct appeal to Xi, telling reporters he declined to do so following a meeting in Beijing in May.

As the US has continued to ratchet up its secondary sanctions related to Iran, the likelihood of China feeling the impact has also increased.

Today’s meeting also comes shortly after US media reported that Iran may have relied on high-resolution Chinese satellite images in its deadly strike on US military personnel in Jordan in July.

Trump has downplayed the significance of the reports, saying both the US and China regularly spy on each other.

Trump continues to clash with press before summit

Reporters from Politico, MS NOW, and CNN have said they were denied access to the White House for the Trump-Xi summit, hours after a judge ruled a ban put in place by Trump was unconstitutional.

US District Judge Tim Kelly, a Trump appointee, ordered the ban to be blocked for 14 days, saying it “likely violated” the media outlets’ rights to due process because they were not given a chance to make their case or appeal the move. Kelly ordered the Trump administration to “immediately return, reinstate, and restore” the outlets’ access to the White House.

But this morning, Politico said its reporter’s credentials were confiscated, and MS NOW and CNN said some of its staff members were denied entry onto the White House grounds.

Trump announced last week he was banning Politico, MS NOW, and CNN from the White House, saying they were spreading “fake news”. The outlets then sued the Trump administration, saying the ban violated the US Constitution’s First Amendment protections for free speech and a free press.

What’s the US view of this summit?

What the US wants out of this summit depends on who you ask.

The artificial intelligence (AI) arms race between the US and China is at the top of the agenda for many in Washington, who are concerned by China’s alleged commercial theft of US AI models and the countries’ rapid development of the emerging technology.

But the Trump administration may have different views. According to the Atlantic Council’s Melanie Hart, who served as a senior adviser on China at the US Department of State, the US government is taking a less aggressive stance toward the country in order to “buy time to unwind China’s dominance over rare earth supply chains.”

Trump wants to leave AI ‘exactly where it is’

The US president has taken to his Truth Social account before today’s meeting, saying AI will be a big topic of discussion.

Still, he said the US and China share the same position.

“I want to leave it exactly where it is,” Trump wrote. “That is China’s position also”.

He added that the US Department of Justice is the “guardrail” for AI in the US, apparently downplaying congressional regulation efforts.
