The International Committee of the Red Cross has warned that hospitals in several Yemeni regions are struggling to cope with a surge in casualties amid acute shortages of medical supplies. The renewed fighting has also displaced more than 200,000 people in recent weeks.

Hospitals across Yemen are struggling to treat a sharp rise in people wounded in fighting along several front lines, the International Committee of the Red Cross said on Wednesday.

Facilities in areas including Marib, Taiz and the Red Sea coast have reported unprecedented numbers of casualties, with some admitting more than 700 in a week.

“Trauma care staff are under enormous pressure,” said Feras Abusamra, the ICRC’s health coordinator. The agency warned that shortages of surgical supplies, anaesthesia, oxygen and medicines are further straining a health system already weakened by years of conflict.

More than 200,000 people have been displaced since fighting renewed in recent weeks, according to the UN’s migration agency.
