U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders has launched a sharp attack on businessman Elon Musk, accusing him of spending $200 million in an effort to buy a U.S. Senate seat in Texas on behalf of President Donald Trump’s Republican Party. In a post on X, Sanders said Musk had spent $250 million on Trump’s presidential campaign and was now spending another $200 million in an attempt to secure a Senate seat in Texas and ensure that Republicans retain control of the Senate. Sanders described the move as contrary to the principles of democracy, arguing that it amounted to oligarchy and the growing influence of wealthy individuals over the country’s affairs and political decisions without meaningful input from the public. He called for billionaires from both political parties to be kept out of the electoral process.
