Abdul El-Sayed clinches Democratic nomination for US Senate seat in Michigan
30 August 2026 03:02 BST
Progressive advocate Abdul El-Sayed has secured the Democratic nomination for the US Senate in Michigan, setting up a high-profile showdown against Republican nominee and former US Representative Mike Rogers in November's midterm elections.
If elected, El-Sayed, the son of Egyptian immigrants, would make history as the first Muslim elected to the US Senate.
On the campaign trail, El-Sayed has taken an outspoken stance on foreign policy, characterising Israel's military offensive in Gaza as genocide while arguing that US resources sent to Israel should be redirected to domestic priorities, including healthcare, affordable housing, and infrastructure.
